Annual Club Workshop

The Art of Simlicity led by Bruce Girdwood FPSNZ Hon PSNZ

Ever come home from a shoot still
buzzing — only to open the images
and feel nothing? The light was
there. The feeling was there. But
somehow it didn’t make it into the
frame.

That gap is what this weekend is about.
An image can come from a single idea,
feeling or emotion. The hard part is finding
that one thing — and photographing it.

We take simplicity to the extreme: strip away everything that isn’t the one thing, until the
image does its job.
Here’s the catch — gear is not the point. You don’t need fancy equipment, just your mind and a tool. I shoot a lot of this on my iPhone. Bring whatever you like; a phone is
genuinely enough.

We’ll explore one idea through concept, composition, practice and post-processing.
I’ll introduce each idea, challenge us to rethink it in the room, then set exercises to practise,
share feedback, and help you evolve a single idea of your own — from a first frame to a
finished image. I’ll share my own gratitude series along the way.

By Sunday you’ll have found something that matters to you, learned to photograph it
simply, and resolved it into one image you’re proud of.

BRING Any camera (a phone is enough), a free editing app (Snapseed or Lightroom), and an open
mind.

Swede Rally

This is a fun day out with other club members. Due to inclement weather the weekend it was due to be held, this event has been postponed to take place on the 2026 calendar.
